2021-22 Scholarship Recipients

Each year WISE has the honor of awarding scholarships to University of Arizona STEM students through three endowed scholarship programs.  We are thrilled to announce this year’s scholarship recipients.

The Harriet Silverman scholarship is awarded annually to female STEM students who have graduate from an Arizona high school and are in their first year pursuing a STEM degree at the University of Arizona. Ms. Silverman is a vocal advocate for women and girls and the co-founder of the Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona. This year’s recipients of the Silverman Scholarship are Trinity Clark and Greatness Ojum. Trinity is a first year student pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering. She aspires to a career in medical technology where to can help elderly populations improve their quality of life.  Greatness is a first year student pursuing a degree in mining and geologic engineering.  She hopes to eventually work in the mining industry with a focus on geomechanics and sustainability. 

The Jo Ann Troutman Scholarship supports women at the University of Arizona who are juniors or seniors majoring in a STEM field or education to teach STEM. This scholarship is in memory of Jo Ann Troutman who was a graduate and long-time staff member at the University of Arizona.  This year’s recipients are Juliana Ignaico, Anett Garcia, Nandita Parekh, and Rosemary Sotelo. Juliana is a junior majoring in Pharmaceutical Sciences. After she gradates, she hopes to continue her education in Pharmacy School and contribute to the healthcare industry as a Pharmacist. Anett is a junior majoring in Biomedical Engineering. After completing her undergraduate degree, Anett hopes to attend graduate school and work on cell and tissue engineering research where she can help create enhancing and life saving technologies.  Nandita is a junior studying Environmental Science, with an emphasis in Leadership, Sustainability, and Communication. She is interested in advocating for intersectional environmental justice and increasing accessibility to environmental science through effective public communication.  Rosemary is a junior majoring in Physiology and Medical Studies. After completing her undergraduate degree, she plans on pursuing her dream of attending medical school and becoming an Obstetrician-Gynecologist.

The Helen Schaefer Scholarship supports women who are entering their sophomore, junior or senior year of study wand who are pursuing a STEM major. This award is in honor of Dr. Helen Schaefer, long time WISE supporter and advocate for women and the arts throughout the Tucson community.  The 2021-22 Schaefer Scholarship recipient is Mia Migliore. Mia is a junior studying Chemical Engineering, who is involved in Engineering Ambassadors, undergraduate research with Dr. Adam Printz investigating perovskite solar cells, and Vice President of the Honors Student Council as their Vice President. After graduation, Mia hopes to work in the energy industry either in the nuclear or renewable energy field and continue to work towards cleaner energy solutions for our planet.
